# How to Update the Firmware on Your Night Owl Recorder
Keeping your Night Owl Recorder updated with the latest firmware is essential for optimal performance and security. Below, you will find some helpful information on how to update the firmware on your Night Owl Recorder.
### Using the Night Owl Protect Mobile App
If you are using the Night Owl Protect mobile app, updating your firmware is a straightforward process. First, ensure that your recorder is connected to the internet. Once confirmed, open the app and navigate to the homepage. From there, click on your recorder to access its settings. Scroll down to find the "Device Information" section, and then click on "Firmware." This will prompt the app to check for any available updates.
**This is the best method if you are using the app**, as it provides a seamless and user-friendly experience for managing your device.
### Updating Without the App
If you do not have access to the app or prefer not to use it, you can still update your firmware manually. Connect your recorder to an Ethernet cable that is linked to your internet source. After establishing the connection, power cycle your recorder by unplugging it and then plugging it back in. Once the recorder powers back on, it should automatically check for updates from the OTA (Over-The-Air) server and download the new firmware.
**Please note:** We have received reports that this method may not work for the VDP series recorders, so it’s advisable to use the app method if you own one of those models.
### Automatic Updates
As an alternative, Night Owl recorders are designed to restart early on Sunday mornings to check for firmware updates from the OTA server. However, it is crucial to ensure that your recorder remains connected to the internet during this time to facilitate the update process.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your Night Owl Recorder is always up to date, providing you with the best possible performance and security features. If you have any further questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to our customer support team!
